Duties Description Position Summary:

The Janitor is responsible for the daily supervision of cleaners assigned to their building(s) and for the cleaning, basic unskilled maintenance and care of buildings including adjacent grounds and sidewalks.

Essential Functions:

Custodial Maintenance:

Responds to building issues and preforms basic unskilled maintenance.
Submits work orders for building repairs requiring semi-skilled trades staff.
Maintains cleaning supply inventory.
Adheres to standard operating procedures and follows assigned routines.
Dusts, sweeps, vacuums and mops flooring in offices and public areas.
Applies finish to coat floors and buffs or burnishes.
Scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using light and heavy (industrial type) powered scrubbers and buffers.
Shampoos rugs periodically using rug shampooing machines.
Mixes and uses various cleaning agents in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
Cleans restrooms and scrubs all areas such as sinks, toilets, urinals and drains.
Restocks paper and soap supplies in restrooms, kitchens and break areas.
Empties recycling and trash receptacles, replaces liners and trash bags for proper disposal.
Cleans interior and some exterior windows, sills, mirrors and glass in corridor doors, working on ladders and scaffolding as required.
Cleans and dusts furniture, exhibit cases, pictures, door trim and chalkboards/whiteboards.
Washes and/or cleans interior tile wall spaces, ceiling fixtures, blinds by hand or with power washing machine, working on ladders and scaffolding, as required.
Cleans locker rooms, shower rooms (walls/drains), pool gyms and gym mats.
Collects, transports and disposes of medical waste or soiled linens in accordance with cleaning procedures.
Cleans blood spills and bodily fluids, including urine, vomit and feces.
Moves heavy furniture, supplies and miscellaneous equipment.
Sweeps and shovels snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walks.
Applies ice melt to sidewalks and building entrance-ways.
Rakes campus grounds.
Cleans and maintains the appearance of building entrances, connecting walks and loading docks.
Locks and unlocks campus buildings.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Supervision:

Oversees the work of other staff members as appropriate to the position; monitoring work assignments, setting schedules, and providing on-going training. 
Inspects work areas to ensure consistency and quality of work and adherence to established procedures, safety regulations, and infection control standards.
Maintains records of work performed, and prepares necessary reports.
Ensures adherence to established College departmental policies and procedures, objectives and safety standards.
Supervises cleaners and assigns specific tasks and gives verbal and/or written instructions.
Monitors work while in progress and when completed.
Assists in training of cleaners.
Provides assistance to resolve work issues.

Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Foster a cooperative work environment.
Effectively resolves minor conflicts.
Working knowledge of common desktop applications such as Excel, Work, etc.
Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Knowledge of the properties of various cleaning substances.

Operating Needs:

Is backup to the supervisor in their absence.
Ability to work holidays, overtime, shift work and college special events.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Effective ans respectful interpersonal skills.
Valid NYS Driver's License.

Working Environment:

Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.  Physical work is a primary part of the job.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Physical demands include walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling objects, lifting and moving objects and repetitive arm movements.
