Duties Description This position is located in the Bureau of Internet and Technology.

The Bureau of Internet and Technology (BIT) of the New York Attorney General’s Office is committed to protecting consumers and families from new and developing online threats. As a pioneer in this field, the Office has brought cutting edge cases and entered important settlements related to a wide range of online and technology issues, including child safety, privacy, deceptive or illegal trade practices, consumer fraud, spyware, spam, discrimination, and free speech.

The Bureau of Internet and Technology (BIT) accepts tips and complaints directly from the public, and mediates disputes between consumers and online sellers, service providers, and Internet companies. It also drafts legislation, issues reports on emerging technology issues, and educates the public on Internet matters.


The incumbent will perform duties under the general supervision and guidance of an attorney, but with considerable independence and discretion.

•Assess, review and respond to Internet and technology-related complaints from the public, as well as inquiries and submissions from AG bureaus, and other local, state, and federal agencies.

•Mediate cases between companies and consumers, from initial complaint through disposition.

•Identify violations of law and patterns of violation.

•Determine future actions needed, or refer complaints to other jurisdictions.

•Investigate and assist with ongoing investigations and the preparation of litigation.

•Perform consumer education and outreach, as needed.

•May supervise interns, volunteers or clerical staff.

•Perform various research, record management, and report generation functions in AG’s case management system.

•Other duties and special projects as assigned.
