Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in a maintenance trade or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades worker, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course. General mechanical knowledge related to making repairs using hand tools & power tools. General carpentry knowledge related to basic construction principles and/or basic skills in sewing desired.


Selection Criteria:

• Candidates will be expected to demonstrate and will be evaluated against the following criteria:
• Demonstrated experience in providing wheelchair preventive maintenance and repair services is desirable.
• Evidence of ability to/experience in working with various materials including, but not limited to, wood, plastic, foams, metals, fabrics, etc.
• Evidence of experience in upholstery/sewing.
• Demonstrated experience/training in the use of equipment and tools used to repair wheelchairs and adaptive equipment/durable medical equipment (DME).
• Demonstrated experience in electronics. Ability to work with 6, 23 and 24 V Gel and Acid Batteries.
• Ability to schedule wheelchair preventive maintenance and repairs, in priority order and in the most time & cost efficient manner; provide loaner wheelchairs/DME as needed & available.
• Ability to maintain a daily documentation of work, inventory of supplies and equipment, document completed work on individuals’ wheelchairs in electronic files, and utilize computer for recordkeeping duties.
• Ability to maintain, store/inventory, and use parts from condemned wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment.
• Ability to do online & telephone searches for adaptive equipment/DME-related parts & supplies, and order as needed, following Agency procurement process.
• Ability to follow safety procedures as required by OSHA/PESH, and maintain shop in orderly, safe condition, including cleaning and storing of equipment after use, and reporting equipment malfunctions immediately to supervisor.
• Ability to provide training to Occupational & Physical Therapy staff in the use of hand tools to perform simple wheelchair adjustments & repairs, and in other areas as requested by supervisor.
• Ability to interact appropriately with a wide variety of people, i.e. individuals, family members, all levels of staff and various departments, outside vendors, etc.
• Possess an acceptable attendance record
• Possess an acceptable work record (e-file).

Duties Description PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is seeking to fill an Adaptive Equipment Gr. 9 Maintenance Assistant position to provide routine repairs and preventive maintenance of wheelchairs and durable medical equipment (DME), as well as basic fabrication of specialized adaptive equipment. Includes coordinating and maintaining repair schedules, prioritizing work requests, maintaining appropriate daily and monthly reports, maintaining an inventory of supplies & equipment in an orderly, safe condition. On-the-job training will be provided by Adaptive Equipment Coordinator, and Adaptive Equipment Specialist with 5+ years of experience. Work is done in program and residential areas in addition to the AES Shop. Assistance is given to the Adaptive Equipment Specialist as necessary.
