FOR INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST TRAINEE 1:
Employees with one year of permanent competitive service as a Trainee 1 in certain titles filled by the PCO exam may qualify for a 70.1 transfer to the Industrial Hygienist Trainee 1 level if they ALSO meet the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering Science, Engineering (Any), Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Health or Environmental Sciences AND the following coursework requirements: eight (8) semester credit hours in chemistry.
FOR INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST TRAINEE 2:
Employees with one year of permanent competitive service as a trainee 2 in certain titles filled by the PCO exam if they ALSO meet the following minimum qualifications:
Either 1. a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene;
Or 2. a bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, environmental health, or environmental science. These degrees must include 12 semester credit hours in industrial hygiene;
Or 3. a bachelor's degree in physical, biological, or engineering science AND one year of industrial hygiene experience;
Or 4. a bachelor's degree in engineering, which must include eight semester credit hours in chemistry, AND one year of industrial hygiene experience.
FOR SENIOR INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST:
Employees with one year of permanent competitive service in certain Grade 18 positions may qualify for a 70.1 transfer to the Senior Industrial Hygienist if they ALSO meet the following minimum qualifications:
Either 1. a master's degree in industrial hygiene;
Or 2. a master's degree in occupational safety and health, environmental health, or environmental science. These degrees must include 12 semester credit hours in industrial hygiene;
Or 3. a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene AND one year of industrial hygiene experience;
Or 4. a bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, environmental health, or environmental science. These degrees must include 12 semester credit hours in industrial hygiene AND you must have one year of industrial hygiene experience;
Or 5. a bachelor's degree in physical, biological, or engineering science AND two years of industrial hygiene experience;
Or 6. a bachelor's degree in engineering which must include eight semester credit hours in chemistry AND two years industrial hygiene experience.

Duties Description STANDARD DUTIES:
As an Industrial Hygienist Trainee 1 or 2, you would participate in an Industrial Hygienist training program and gain experience in the duties performed by Senior Industrial Hygienists. Upon successfully completing one year as a Trainee 1, you would be advanced to Trainee 2. Upon successfully completing one year as a Trainee 2, you would be advanced to Senior Industrial Hygienist without further testing. You will be expected to use a computer in the performance of these duties.
As a Senior Industrial Hygienist, you would inspect work sites to determine compliance with state and federal standards and guidelines and to identify health violations and health hazards, particularly those associated with exposure to toxic or explosive chemicals and substances in the form of dusts, fibers (including asbestos), fumes, mists, vapors, gases, metals, and pathogenic organisms. You would also identify hazards such as noise and vibrations, light of various types, and other physical energies including electromagnetic emissions. Based upon the results of field testing and/or laboratory analyses taken from on-site inspections, you might confer with management and employee representatives and/or take appropriate enforcement or consultation action. You might conduct training for appropriate staff or public and private sector employers and employees. You will be expected to use a computer in the performance of these duties.
Additional Comments As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
