Minimum Qualifications This position is open to NYS employees with one year of permanent, competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 3 (Data Communications), SG-23, or to those deemed eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. Duties Description This position is for employment with the IT Unit of the New York State Board of Elections (SBOE) in Albany, NY. The State Board of Elections works with, but is independent from, the NYS Office of IT Services.
As a member of the Infrastructure Team the selected candidate will serve as a Senior Network Administrator for the Board of Elections critical WAN/LAN networks, supporting the Statewide Voter Registration, Candidate Management and Campaign Finance systems.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work closely with BOE, county and vendor IT staff to support site VPN’s.
- Participate in design, planning, installation, configuration and administration of network hardware and software resources.
- Evaluate a new hardware and/or software products to meet the needs of the agency.
- Review security vulnerability reports and provide guidance on issues found and assist in the remediation tasks.
- Work with staff to establish and/or update technology policies and procedures.
- Prepares and/or assists with the preparation and maintenance of detailed technical, procedures, user guides, knowledge base articles, network documentation and design diagrams.
- Provide Level 2 support and/or instruction to agency staff, vendor and/or county stake holders.
- Liaison with NYS ITS, vendors, and network service providers (Spectrum TW, ITS NYeNet/iPort, etc.) as necessary to resolve issues and maintain network.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Supervise staff as needed.
Desired Experience:
- Experience with networking hardware such as Cisco, Checkpoint, and F5 GTM/LTM.
- Strong knowledge of switching, routing and site-to-site VPN technologies.
- Strong understanding of networking services such as DNS and DHCP.
- Knowledge of IPS/IDS systems.
- Knowledgeable of VMware networking.
- Ability to work in a team environment or independent without supervision.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex problems.
- Ability to multi-task as priorities and/or problems arise.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with technical staff and agency program staff.
