Examples of professional geology experience are, but are not limited to: Experience that involves actual evaluations of subsurface conditions. For example, all forms of hydrogeology (including environmental or water supply subsurface investigations), exploration work in the mining or oil and gas industries, or production drilling. Geophysical and geotechnical investigations focused on geologic conditions and interpretation of data from laboratory analysis and studies.

Examples of non-qualifying experience are, but not limited to: Hydrological experience focused primarily on surface water as opposed to groundwater, including flood analysis, reservoir or storm sewer design, and similar work. Geography and exclusively laboratory-based work such as preparing thin sections for microscopic analysis, or preparing soil and rock samples for chemical analysis. Planning and evaluation of pipelines, storage tanks, tank integrity and related work.

If there is a viable promotion examination eligible list (three acceptors) for this position, candidates who qualify based on 70.4 transfer cannot be considered.

NOTE: In accordance with Chapter 475 of the Laws of 2014, all professional geologists in New York State must obtain licensure under Title VIII of the Education Law; based on this, you will be required to obtain your professional geology license in order to be promoted in the future.

Duties Description Successful applicant will be assigned to manage environmental remediation projects at various remedial stages in the Remedial Bureau C. The candidate will perform geologic investigations of contaminated sites in the Manufactured Gas Plant, Brownfield and State Superfund programs. Successful candidate will have some level of experience in managing sites with emerging contaminants, including perfluorinated compounds, and should be able to develop work plans and perform site investigations to determine the nature and extent of conventional and emerging contaminants. Candidate will review and interpret data related to investigations of contaminated soil, groundwater and soil vapor and prepare GIS-based evaluations of the investigation results.

Candidate will review work plans, remedial investigation reports and other site related documents and develop Decision Documents for the respective sites. Other duties will include providing oversight of work performed by consultants and contractors. Some travel including overnight stay to sites statewide will be required.

Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including respirator, will be required. Travel and overtime may be required. Must successfully complete (or have completed) the 40 hour OSHA 1910.120 training course and all other required training. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
