Minimum Qualifications Current or previous one year permanent service as a Recreation Therapist.

70.1 Transfer: In an approved Civil Service title within two salary grades with prescribed educational requirements.

Provisional Qualifications:

• A bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation; OR
• A bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education or Adaptive Physical Education AND one year of experience in planning and administering a therapeutic recreation program+ which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic recreational activities for geriatric patients/residents, individuals with developmental disabilities, individuals with psychiatric disabilities, individuals that are physically challenged, or individuals in treatment for chemical dependency; OR
• Current credentials as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) issued by the National Council For Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), 7 Elmwood Drive, New City, NY 10956. For further information you may contact them at (845) 639-1439 or at www.NCTRC.org

• + A therapeutic recreation program is defined as a professional service that assists people with disabilities and other limitations to have a leisure life-style that encompasses functional independence, health and well-being through treatment, education and participation. Therapeutic recreation is practiced in clinical, community and residential treatment settings.

Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Perform a wide range of duties involved in the provision of therapeutic and rehabilitative recreation programs to enhance individuals physical, mental, and social well-being. Incumbents develop, implement, direct, and evaluate recreational activities and programs, including but not limited to competitive and non-competitive sports; arts and crafts; shows and holiday programs; development of leisure time activities; organize parties and events; organize and attend recreational community inclusion outings; and other cultural activities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Deliver a variety of recreation activities for individuals and/or groups, and adapt activities to adjust to the function level, physical ability, and/or rehabilitative and clinical needs of participants.
• Ensure that delivered recreation activities are in compliance with recreation department policies and procedures.
• Coordinate recreational activities with external parties to provide additional opportunities for assigned individuals and/or groups.
• Write and submit detailed activities reports and participant progress notes to upper level staff for all recreation therapy activities.
• Observe and record individuals participation, reactions, behavioral patterns, and progress over the course of recreational programming, and report changes to upper-level staff.
• Assist higher level recreation staff in the evaluation of recreation activities, and recommend new activities to address the recreational needs of individuals and/or groups.
• Order and maintain recreation supplies and equipment for assigned activities.
• Attend recreation department and/or treatment team meetings.
