Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• In title General Mechanic, Grade 12, or

• Eligible for a 70.1 transfer by way of current permanent status in a title deemed comparable to General Mechanic by the Department of Civil Service, or

• Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position, which would provide training that is equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.

Qualifying experience gained through other than a formal apprentice program, in order to be deemed equivalent, must have been carefully designed and monitored work experience demonstrating a progression of skills and abilities equal to that achieved during an apprentice program and include relevant course work. Candidates are required to provide specific, verifiable information about their qualifying experience. This information should be on the letterhead of the employer under whom the qualifying experience was gained and include names and titles of supervisors, duties performed during the training period and specific dates of employment and be signed by that employer.
• Candidates qualifying through the completion of appropriate course work should include a copy of their transcript or listing of course work completed.
• A copy of a trades union card is acceptable documentary proof of qualification.
• Candidates who do not submit appropriate documentary proof that they meet the minimum qualifications will not be considered for appointment.
Per agreement between the Civil Service Employees’ Association Inc. and the State of New York Article 45 (c) the requirement to prove qualification shall rest with the employee.



Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION:

General Mechanics perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance repair, installation and construction tasks in the mechanical, building and electrical trades in multiple community residences and other buildings.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Repair locks and may provide and inventory keys to maintain security in work and individual lining areas..
• Repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment including but not limited to fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, circuitry, and related equipment in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
• Performs a variety of carpentry related duties, including but not limited to installations and repairs of flooring, windows, doors, millwork, framing, sheet rocking, decks and ramps.
• Repairs, installs and maintains plumbing fixtures and appliances, including but not limited to: sinks, showers, baths, commodes, dishwashers, domestic water and drainage distribution systems.
• Performs a variety of painting related duties including but not limited to preparing surfaces, priming and painting.
• Performs maintenance and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including but not limited to bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps and generators.
• Requires daily travel within the district.
• May require some travel within NY State to assist other districts with special projects.
• Candidate will be trained in the operation and maintenance procedures as related to Asbestos Containing Materials.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
• Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Will be required to train and supervise others.
• Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.
• Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.
• Basic computer skills preferred
• Valid NYS driver’s License

Additional Comments ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• CAPA: Must be cleared by the NYS Central Register for Child Abuse and Maltreatment, if position requires working with minors and not previously cleared.

If you are employed by state government you may be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments have been made under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
