Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and to communicate effectively to obtain and convey information
• Possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Grounds Workers are responsible for maintaining the appearance and condition of grounds, athletics fields, walkways, and roads at State facilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintain the appearance and conditions of grounds at State facilities.
• Clean grounds by sweeping, raking, shoveling and removing debris, leaves, branches, etc.
• Clear sites and prepare them for planting by raking, tilling soil, adding mulch and digging.
• Plant seeds, bushes, trees, etc. using hand or power equipment.
• Cut grass using lawnmowers; fertilize and water grounds; prune bushes and trees; remove or transplant bushes or trees.
• Remove dead trees by cutting and splitting logs using chainsaws, sledge hammers and wedges.
• Load trucks with debris, logs, dirt, etc. using hand or power equipment.
• May construct, repair or paint fences.

• Maintain roads, walkways and parking lots at State facilities.
• Break up concrete to repair holes using hand or power equipment.
• Mix and apply concrete and asphalt for patches.
• Remove trash and debris from roads, walkways and parking lots by sweeping and shoveling by hand.
• Remove snow and ice from walkways by shoveling and operating snow removal equipment.
• Plow roads and parking lots with trucks and tractors.
• Mix salt, sand, and calcium for use on walkways and roads and spread by hand or power equipment.

• May perform a variety of manual tasks in support of the building and grounds program.
• Set up and remove snow from fences and markers at fire hydrants and catch basins.
• Perform routine building maintenance work and minor maintenance on tools and power machines.
• Load and unload trucks and move furniture.
• Shovel, dig ditches, and install signs.

• May lead students, inmates, clients, or contract employees in the performance of grounds and maintenance activities.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

• Able to work independently or as part of a work team.
• Able to operate a variety of hand and power equipment in a safe manner.
