Minimum Qualifications EITHER 1) Reachable on the Civil Service eligible list. (If you are on the eligible list for this title and reachable, you will automatically be considered for this position and it is not necessary to file an application via this posting); OR 2) Eligible for reassignment by virtue of having permanent competitive service as a Teachers’ Retirement Examiner 1 (12); OR 3) Eligible for transfer under the provisions of Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law by virtue of having one year of permanent competitive service in an appropriate title.
Duties Description - Reviews member retirement applications; determines that all supporting documents required under Statutes and Teachers’ Retirement System policies are submitted with application; contacts member to obtain required documents.
- Under the supervision of the Teachers’ Retirement Examiner 2, determines eligibility for service retirement benefits, disability benefits and/or post retirement death benefits. Performs benefit calculations and research activity required to determine years of service, military status, final average salary, etc.
- Communicates both in writing and by phone with members, retirees, beneficiaries, school administrators, internal departments, etc. for a variety of purposes, including notice of benefit determination, acquisition of required support material, explanations of retirement processing, Domestic Relations Orders (DRO), retirement options, prior service, transfers, loans and other benefits.
- May supervise the work of Office Assistant 2 (Calculations) employees as follows: reviews their benefit calculations; assists and advises them on procedure, policy and legal requirements as applied to benefit calculations, qualifications and requirements of benefit options.
- May provide on-the-spot benefit estimates for a member based on information in the member’s file and additional information gathered during a phone interview.
-The position may be deployed to other sections within the Member Benefits department depending on work priorities.
- May perform other duties as described in the Civil Service classification standards for this title.
