Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Reassignment: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Senior Librarian (Technical Processes).

Provisional Appointment to Senior Librarian (Technical Processes): Candidates must have a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association AND two years of full time post-degree professional librarian experience in a medium to large library environment where your primary duty includes: acquiring library materials; acquiring, classifying and describing government documents from a federal or state agency for addition to the library’s collection; or cataloging library materials using one or more of the following metadata standards: RDA, Dublin Core, MODS or METS.

A master’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology is not qualifying.

Provisional Appointment to Librarian 1, equated to SG-15: Candidates must have a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.

Provisional Appointment to Librarian 2, equated to SG-17: Candidates must have a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association AND one year of full time post-degree professional librarian experience in a medium to large library environment where your primary duty includes: acquiring library materials; acquiring, classifying and describing government documents from a federal or state agency for addition to the library’s collection; or cataloging library materials using one or more of the following metadata standards: RDA, Dublin Core, MODS or METS.

NOTE: The Civil Service examinations for these titles were given in August 2016. In order to be considered for a provisional appointment, you must have taken either the Librarian 1 or Senior Librarian (Technical Processes) examinations.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Senior Librarian (Technical Processes) position within the New York State Library (NYSL). Under the direction of the Associate Librarian (Technical Processes), the incumbent of this position will be responsible for the description of NYSL resources in all formats utilizing MARC cataloging and non-MARC cataloging. Other duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Create original catalog records for electronic New York State documents, and other materials and formats as required, for the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the local Sirsi catalog;
• Search a variety of standard cataloging tools such as Cataloger’s Desktop, RDA Toolkit, OCLC bibliographic and authority files and MARC manuals;
• Create Library of Congress NACO name authority records on OCLC;
• Assign descriptive information, Library of Congress subject headings, Document and Dewey classification, and MARC tagging for bibliographic metadata records;
• Resolve problems and perform bibliographic database maintenance;
• Create and maintain OCLC records and deposit metadata into both national and local repositories;
• Provide links from catalog records to electronic documents;
• Maintain expertise and keep current with cataloging practices, rules, and standards;
• Work with staff in Reference, Preservation, and other areas of the NYSL to resolve problems or improve procedures and workflow;
• Serve on selected NYSL and professional task forces and committees and make recommendations as needed; and
• Review and revise work of support staff.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent or non-permanent provisional appointment. The work schedule for this position includes flexible hours of Monday through Friday (8:00am – 5:00pm) with rotating Saturdays (9:15am – 5:15pm). Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. *Leads to a maximum salary of $74,301 based on annual performance advances.
