Minimum Qualifications Successful completion of a NYS two-year Electrician Traineeship or NYS two-year electrician training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent electrical two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled journey-level electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in the electrical trade or training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. Coursework must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Supervising Electrician or higher level personnel, the Electrician may be engaged in the performance of the following activities working from verbal or written descriptions or drawings and sketches.

1. Plan and lay out electrical work; wire new installations;

2. repair, maintain and install electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, switches and wiring, alarm systems, traffic signals and related equipment and public address systems;

3. locate and diagnose electrical malfunction using test instruments such as ammeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter and test lamp;

4. test generators and heaters for safety and efficiency using standard test equipment and by observing functioning of such equipment.

5. install fixtures, motors and other electrical equipment; make necessary adjustments during/after installation;

6. inspect and test circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding and repair or rewire system according to building codes and safety regulations;

7. maintain shop machinery, equipment and electrical tools; make sure work areas and equipment are clean, safe and properly serviced;

8. may draw rough sketches or prepare plans to accomplish work projects as required; lay out tasks for subordinate staff and perform necessary trades tasks as required;

9. give verbal instruction and/or demonstrate proper electrical techniques and use of electrical tools and equipment to subordinate staff;

10. supervise, direct and coordinate sub-journey level workers involved in installation, maintenance or repair of various types of electrical equipment, motors, pumps generators, etc.;

11. conduct inspections of facilities to determine maintenance needs and make recommendations of priorities for repair based on nature of maintenance problem;

12. operate light trucks, aerial bucket truck and other motor vehicles required to get to various facilities in the performance of duties assigned.

13. may be required to load and unload materials, tools and equipment of varying weights and
sizes as needed in the performance of duties assigned.

14. prepare sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment and can interpret and follow diagrams or blueprints of electrical installations;

15. test, adjust, calibrate and maintain a wide variety of control equipment including central heating plant controls, building heating, air conditioning and ventilating equipment, controls for refrigeration and a variety of other equipment and systems;

16. measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit;

17. may recommend to supervisor, and order, the type, quantity and quality of materials to be used for projects, and may be required to prepare specifications for purchase;

18. perform other related duties as required.

Additional Comments Operational Needs:

By the date of appointment, selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class D Driver License as a term and condition of employment.
