Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Master’s degree in earth science, geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrogeology;
2. OR Bachelor’s degree in earth science, geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrogeology including or supplemented by 30 semester credit hours which must be in geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry and/or hydrogeology;
3. OR Bachelor’s or higher degree including or supplemented by at least 60 semester credit hours in geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrogeology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, earth science, atmospheric science and mathematics, 30 of which must be in geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry and/or hydrogeology.

Duties Description Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Evaluating existing highway rock cut locations for rock slope stability and providing remediation recommendations.
• Determining optimal rock cut parameters for new highway alignments.
• Responding to rockfall events along State highways to evaluate rock slope stability and provide cleanup and remediation recommendations.
• Performing geologic investigations and providing bedrock parameters at bridge and other structure sites.
• Inspecting stonefill material for erosion protection.
• Evaluating groundwater conditions.
• Performing geophysical surveys to determine subsurface conditions including depth to bedrock.
• Serving as a technical advisor on construction projects.
• Using computer-related techniques in engineering and geologic projects.

Responsibilities also may include participating within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
