Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Open Competitive: two years of experience supervising workers in the maintenance and operation of a physical plant; or in building renovation or construction.

Promotion: Either A. one year as a Maintenance Supervisor 1, Plant Utilities Engineer 2, or Public Buildings Manager 1;

Or B. an Asbestos Control Supervisor; Building Maintenance Supervisor 1; Carpenter; Electrician; Electronic Equipment Mechanic; General Mechanic; Grounds Construction Supervisor; Head Janitor; Locksmith; Machinist; Mason and Plasterer; Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 1 or 2; Motor Equipment Mechanic; Painter; Park Sanitation Superintendent; Park Supervisor 1 or 2; Plant Utilities Engineer 1; Plumber and Steamfitter; Refrigeration Mechanic; Roofer and Tinsmith; Senior Filter Plant Operator; Supervising Carpenter; Supervising Electrician; Supervising Mason and Plasterer; Supervising Painter; Supervising Plumber and Steamfitter; Supervisor, General Services Grounds Operations and Horticulture 1; Supervisor Grounds; Vocational Instructor (all levels); Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 3; or Welder.


NOTE: If a provisional appointment is made, the incumbent must take and pass a Civil Service examination for this position and be reachable; i.e., be one of the top three (3) candidates on the resulting eligible list willing to accept the position.

Duties Description Under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor, the incumbent will supervise and provide technical direction to Riverbank’s maintenance staff engaged in electrical, mechanical, carpentry, painting, plastering, masonry and plumbing trades as well as grounds keeping and housekeeping activities.

Duties will include but are not limited to: understanding and reviewing work orders, blueprints and specifications for repairs, installation and construction to determine labor needs, materials and costs needed to complete projects; coordinating staff and meeting with outside contractors as needed and providing clear direction to assure timely and cost effective completion of projects; inspecting work to ensure compliance with project specifications; initiating and preparing the scope of work and managing preventive maintenance schedules; preparing and maintaining written records of work performed and completed along with letter orders, requisitions, vouchers, invoices and receiving reports; scheduling staff and work priorities to ensure operational needs are met; evaluating staff performance and providing direction and counseling to staff as needed.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:

The required work week is typically Monday through Friday, 7 AM – 3:30 PM. Applicants should expect to be scheduled to work weekends, holidays and evenings based on operational needs. Candidates must possess effective communication skills. Experience and ability to work with Microsoft computer applications, including Excel, Word and email is required. A valid NYS driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or must be obtained during the probationary period as a term and condition of employment. A current driver’s license must also be maintained as a condition of employment.

Candidates must possess the ability to supervise others and to act independently with a minimum of supervision.
