Minimum Qualifications Candidates must be a current New York State employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service as an Associate Attorney (G-28/ M3); OR a New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title at Grade 27 / M2 or above with current New York State Bar Admission and eligible for transfer to Associate Attorney under Sections 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. (Candidates requesting consideration for transfer must also be a graduate of an accredited law school with a LLB or JD degree).
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate should be a highly motivated individual interested in working in public service with excellent written and oral communication skills, sound judgment, and a desire to learn new subject areas. As this position supervises a staff of five employees, experience supervising staff is preferred.
Duties Description This is an Associate Attorney position in DMV’s Counsel’s Office. The Associate Attorney is responsible for the management of five Assistant Counsels who provide legal assistance and support to the agency program units and administrators. The Associate Attorney provides direct supervision and assistance to the Assistant Counsels relative to litigation, correspondence, contracts, FOIL matters, legislation and regulations, and is responsible for administrative matters such as reviewing and approving LATS, and tracking CLE and SLMS compliance. The Associate Attorney is also responsible for various personnel matters, such as preparing probation reports and performance evaluations relative to the Assistant Counsels. This position requires drafting and review of agency regulations and legislation affecting the Agency. The Associate Attorney will provide training to judges and clerks on the Vehicle and Traffic Law and DMV policies and procedures. Responsibilities also include preparation and/or review of reports pertaining to litigation and legal matters and attendance in meetings as requested and/or required. Provides direct support to the First Assistant Counsel.

Candidates must also have strong leadership, multitasking and organizational skills, a positive attitude and courteous demeanor. Participation in LEAN is a plus.
