Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:
Applicants must have proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND one of the following:
• qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below, OR
• one year of full-time qualifying experience as listed below.
This title includes a traineeship opportunity and applicants must meet one of the following:
Either 1. A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below;
Or 2. Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience as listed below.
Qualifying degrees: Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.
Qualifying experience: One year of full-time engineering experience in Mechanical/HVAC.
Duties Description • Design and review plans for plumbing, piping, fire protection systems, and heating and ventilating systems for new and rehabilitation construction projects.
• Work on projects that may involve needed design changes for mechanical systems of existing facilities that can present complex problems in order to be compatible with the plans for existing building structures.
• May be required to prepare mechanical specifications, mechanical estimates, and studies for energy conservation for the mechanical design projects.
• May be required to supervise and review consultant work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Some travel may be required.
Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired before May 2024 will be appointed on a temporary basis. In May 2024, satisfactory employees will receive permanent, non-competitive appointments and will begin a probationary period.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
