Duties/ Responsibilities

The Psychiatric Examiner (Psychologist) will conduct psychiatric evaluations of individuals who are statutorily referred for civil management consideration under the Sex Offender Management and Treatment Act (SOMTA). The incumbent will review records, conduct and interpret actuarial risk assessments, complete clinical face-to-face interviews, provide expert testimony in court for three types of evaluations:

To assist in the determination of the presence of a mental abnormality and whether civil confinement or intensive community supervision and treatment is appropriate,

To evaluate annually for the need for continued confinement,

To determine the level of dangerousness in identified community treatment cases.
The incumbent will work as part of a clinical team and will interface with staff at OMH Central Office, OMH facilities, Department of Correctional Services, Division of Parole, Office of the Attorney General, and local agency personnel.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a field of psychology AND a current license to practice psychology in New York State or be New York State license eligible. Candidates who have experience treating and/or evaluating forensic or sex offender populations are strongly encouraged to apply.
